A couple of years ago I was informed of the problem with Gen 3 Prius’ head gasket blowing at 160k – 220k miles from Todd Thompson of Tampa Hybrids. Realizing the numbers of Toyota Priuses in the Minneapolis – Madison – Lacrosse area I decided to see if I could help. I headed to Tampa Florida to train with the area’s best Prius Mechanics at Tampa Hybrids. During my training, I learned everything I needed to replace head gaskets like a pro. I already had a shop with a vehicle lift and tools so with my new-found skills, I was ready to launch my business.
At that time, the dealerships were not interested in replacing head gaskets but rather opting to replace the entire motor instead. This replacement cost the customer around $8000, which seems quite expensive, especially when considering many smart Prius owners drive their awesome cars since they save gas money. Many small mechanic shops had been successfully replacing head gaskets for a fraction on the cost of replacing the engine.
