The symptoms of a blown head gasket are pretty clear:

  • When starting the car in the morning, the engine will rattle something awful for about 10-20 seconds and the the rattle will go away and will run normally 
  • You will get a check engine light and if you scan the code it will tell you it is a misfire (P0301-4)
  • Your coolant reservoir, which is located just behind the passenger side headlight, will be low or empty.
  • You may be blowing white smoke out of your exhaust tail pipe

It is critical that you discontinue driving your prius if you have these symptoms. Doing so WILL cause more severe engine damage.
We Understand the predicament you and thousands of other Prius owners find themselves in. I have been in the same situation myself, but take heart. While the Toyota dealership may give you the option of replacing the motor. (Nine thousand dollars) or having them replace the head gasket (4,400.00 plus tax)
We do the whole replacement for 2,200.00 plus tax. This includes:
New head gasket - new PCV valve - new spark plugs - new oil/filter - new coolant - full cleaning of the EGR system and intake. All labor is included. In addition to replacing the head gasket, we also hand wash your car and detail the engine bay.

The Toyota dealership pretty much sounded the death knell for my 2012 Prius V, with a very costly engine replacement or repair, whichever I would choose. However, we researched the issue, found it was common in Generation 3 Priuses, and learned that there was a place in Onalaska that specialized in fixing just that issue. It took a little logistics to get my car there, but it was well worth the effort, as in one week I got my car back in what seems to be like-new running condition, with a one-year warranty and at a fraction of what the dealership quoted me. Doug's communication was also excellent throughout. I'm thrilled to be able to get a few more years out of a well cared for car! We highly recommend Black River Hybrids for this engine repair!

My 2014 Lexus CT200h turns out shares the same engine as the 2010-15 Prius. Toyota dealer in town recommended a new used engine at a cost of $8300. We haven’t abused our CT but felt it was too much $to put in a 10 year old car. It sat on the dealer lot for almost a month before we found Doug. Finding out that this is a problem for these particular engines was bad news but finding Doug has a solution to the problem was great news! Completed the job when said and only $2200. We are very satisfied with the results and Doug is a great guy to talk with and is honest as they come. Thanks Doug!
